Description

The volume is a product of the conference titled: Aspects of the Balkan Cities from 1990 to the Present: Space and People, Culture and Tourism, held from October 19-21, 2018 in Komotini and organized by the Department of History and Ethnology in collaboration with the Laboratory of Folklore and Social Anthropology at Democritus University of Thrace.

The studies in this volume address the need for a multi-layered and interdisciplinary approach to urban societies in the Balkans due to the various factors that influenced their development after the changes that began in 1989 and continued over the following years. The studies examine various aspects of Balkan urbanity, which are intertwined with issues of managing the memory of different cultural heritage and tourism.

The title of this volume, Post-Urbanities, Cultural Reconsiderations and Tourism in the Balkans, is based on thematic sections as they were shaped concerning the aforementioned issues.

The first section includes papers related to the spatial and socio-economic transformations in the Balkans after 1989 and their impacts on society. The accession of former socialist countries to the capitalist era, the migration crisis, the opening of borders, and changes in production models are some of the main characteristics of these changes.

The papers in the second section examine the management of the memorial heritage, the condition of monuments, and the broader cultural policies followed by national and local authorities in the Balkans after 1989. Memory policies and their portrayal in public space contributed to shaping new urban identities, which do not necessarily align with the urban reality experienced by society itself.

The issues of the third thematic section relate cultural heritage and tradition management to tourism. The promotion of new urban identities through tourism practices and questions regarding the cultural policies that co-shape current cultural identities complete the overall picture of transformations in the Balkans from 1989 to the present day.
