Description

A secret, hastily organized naval mission to Cyprus in 1964 ends in armed conflict, fails, costs lives, and remains classified for 52 full years. This is the memory of the commander of this ill-fated mission, a young officer of the Greek Navy who was in his twenties at the time, and was appointed captain of the patrol boat PIGASOS, which fought heroically during a battle against the Turkish Air Force.

The author, now left-handed and committed to silence, begins a new life and career. He studies at the Polytechnic University of Athens, adapts to the different realities of the business world, and fights against prejudices and the pity of those around him, but mainly against himself and guilt for the loss of his friends and fellow sailors.

In 2016, the state finally lifted the secrecy—too late for the relatives of the six Greeks and one Cypriot volunteer who lost their lives, as well as for the remaining survivors, all long forgotten by leadership. Focused on naval history, the only naval battle between Greece and Turkey in the last 100 years, Dimitris Mitsatsos shares his personal journey, revealing unknown aspects of historical events.

He talks about ideals, values, and human moments, about people he met and places he traveled during his tumultuous life, providing us with a valuable historical and human testimony. With insight, sensitivity, and courage, he conveys a message of strength and character in the ongoing struggle against adversity and hardships imposed by the Greek state, as well as a message of resilience in the face of tragic moments, when every aspect of life is suddenly turned upside down.
