The Canadian Jesuit Bernard Lonergan (1904-1984) published his great work "Insight: A Study of Human Understanding" in 1957. Throughout its nearly one thousand pages, he proposes a rigorous epistemological path to understand understanding itself, specifically that miraculous moment when something is revealed to us and becomes clear.

Taking the ideas of this brilliant work as a starting point, Lonergan later developed a "method" to "arrive at understanding" in the field of theology. He approaches this interdisciplinarily, since theology is not an isolated science in itself but connected with other human knowledge, especially the social sciences.

For this encyclopedic intellectual, "the method is not a set of rules that anyone, even a fool, must meticulously follow. On the contrary, it is rather a framework intended to strengthen creativity and collaboration. The method describes the various groups of operations that theologians must perform in fulfilling their tasks [...]. In such a contemporary theology, we consider eight different tasks: research, interpretation, history, dialectic, explanation of foundations, establishment of doctrines, systematization, communication" (Introduction).

Ultimately, the proposed "theological method" seeks for those who approach theology to discover its own dynamic structure that helps them receive knowledge and verify its validity, but always within a truly creative framework.
