Legal measures to protect the French language testify to the cultural value that the French-speaking community places on their language and at the same time serve as a primary element of identity.

This study provides an opportunity to get to know the language law of 1994, known as the Loi Toubon, as an important area of current French language policy in a nuanced and unbiased way. The author analyzes the historical and ideological foundations that contributed to the creation of the law, systematically compares its functioning and implementation, and illustrates the resulting legal practice with relevant case studies.

Finally, a survey reveals compliance with labor law requirements in multinational companies and the language attitudes of the employees there.
