Seneca’s “Letters to Lucilius” by Lucius Annaeus Seneca is one of the most important works of late antiquity and, at the same time, a comprehensive presentation of Stoic moral philosophy. It consists of 124 letters addressed to his friend Lucilius and written in the final years of the philosopher’s life.

Although they take the form of personal correspondence, they are in essence a philosophical work with an educational character, in which Seneca attempts to guide the recipient—and with him every reader—toward the attainment of wisdom and inner peace. The central theme of the work is the pursuit of virtue as the only true good. Seneca argues that external goods, such as wealth, health, social status, or fame, have no moral value in themselves.

True happiness depends exclusively on the inner state of the soul and on the human being’s ability to live according to reason and nature. Virtue, that is, wisdom, justice, courage, and moderation, is the only stable foundation of a fulfilled life. Particular emphasis is placed on the proper use of time, as Seneca believes that most people waste their lives on vain pursuits and pointless activities.

According to Seneca, philosophy teaches people to live consciously and to make use of every day. The theme of death also holds an important place in the work. Seneca stresses that death is not an evil, but a natural event, and anyone who has trained in philosophy is ready to accept it with serenity.

At the same time, the letters analyze the importance of self-control, with Seneca referring to the fact that people often become slaves to their desires and to public opinion. True freedom does not depend on external circumstances, but on inner independence.

Friendship occupies a prominent place in the work, as Seneca considers it essential to human life, not as a means of benefit, but as a relationship based on virtue and mutual trust. Overall, the “Letters to Lucilius” form a guide to moral perfection and inner cultivation, offering practical advice for everyday life.
