Description & Specifications

A gripping story that demonstrates how the social environment shapes – and often destroys – male identity, from one of the most important voices in contemporary Latin American literature.

What can happen when desire takes over the men of two families divided by an old feud and who, nevertheless, share the same prejudices, misery, and violence?

Sons of poor and abandoned men, Marsiano Mirando and Pacharito Tamay adopt their fathers' hatred as their own. They perform the same choreography and repeat the same words. Intercourse, battle, bitterness. However, even within these seemingly rigid cultural structures, love and desire take their own forms.

In this book, Selva Almada crafts complex characters with exceptional sensitivity: intelligent, wild, disappointed, full of vitality, even tender. The male world reveals its secrets in this powerful novel and challenges its archaic structures. The author avoids leniency but does not condemn them. She listens to their dialogues, unfolds the landscape of the coastline where they live and breathe the warm air of the atmosphere. She reconstructs their stories and, at the same time, gives them the freedom to ignore them. From birth to death, she seems to imply, there is not just one path.

They wrote about the book:

“Almada depicts scenes of sex, violence, and rage with rawness. I feel her prose in my body: a punch in the stomach, like the sharp sensation of glass.” Morgan Graham, Chicago Review of Books

“Almada reveals the violent impulses that surface in rural Argentina. With sharp and rough writing, which gradually softens throughout the narrative, the author leads the reader into a reality where pain, betrayal, and fear become everyday life in her country’s rural world.” Ariane Singer, Le Monde

“Almada explores a broken place, south of Juan Rulfo and Faulkner, and does so with spare prose, with minimal stylistic embellishments and a neutral, almost indifferent tone. Her fiction, the story she tells, is wild and harsh.” Alberto Gordo, El Cultural
