From the "Children's Byzantine Choir" of the Athens Conservatory to the present day, many years have passed at the psalterion and in the women’s galleries of the churches of Athens and its suburbs. With the same passion, sometimes as a psalti and sometimes as a choir singer, I served the Divine Liturgy.
The natural evolution of all this was that I too would become a choir director someday. There, the repertoire had to be enriched, and my responsibilities in the Church eventually led me to become a composer. However, always, from early on, I was increasingly bothered by the underground conflict between church singers and choir singers, which ultimately was based on mistaken views from both sides.
Psaltic art is a vocal art and is based on natural laws. Trying to imitate Eastern maqams, one falls musically into the same mistake as a choir singer pretending to be a Neapolitan troubadour. But beware! Only natural sound, produced by well-trained vocalists, will give us what we seek, which is nothing other than the interpretation of the Divine Word.
Today, I present this small work of mine, with the hope that everyone will make an effort to approach the goal, which is none other than prayer. Through the Harmony of the Universe, we will come closer to our Creator. Amen.
