The work was written in 1934. It is the penultimate dramatic work of L. Pirandello. It premiered in Czech at the National Theatre of Prague on November 19, 1934, for the first time. Pirandello, who had just received the Nobel Prize in Stockholm, attended the Prague premiere.

In Italy, it was performed on December 13, 1935, in Rome, at the Teatro Argentina, with Ruggero Ruggeri in the main role and directed by himself.

This work holds a unique place in the theater of Luigi Pirandello because it addresses the problem of human responsibility to the most extreme and even most absurd consequences.
