Althaea or marshmallow (Althaea Officinalis - marshmallow) is a common plant in Europe and Western Asia. It is usually found near riverbeds, as it prefers wet, sandy soils. All parts of the plant are useful in herbal medicine.
Althaea is an ancient edible plant and medicine, mentioned in the Bible and in Arab and Chinese history as valuable food for the poor and during times of famine. Today, Althaea is used by herbalists to treat gastrointestinal problems, as its high content of mucilage (up to 35% in the roots and up to 10% in the leaves) allows it to soothe and heal inflammations of the stomach and small intestine.
- Its effectiveness is valued in ulcers and in cases of gastritis and colitis.
- It has a positive effect on the urinary system.
- It contains tannins and 1-2% asparagine.
The recommended dosage by therapists is 6.0g daily. Use 2.0g (one teaspoon) in 250ml of water (one cup) three times a day. It is preferable to leave the Althaea in cold water overnight for the preparation of an infusion.
