Frederick Kiesler's first publication titled "Magic Architecture" is a history of human architecture spanning across eras, precious yet little known. This work represents Kiesler's most ambitious book, including the history of human habitation from prehistory to the modern age, although it was never published as Kiesler pursued other exhibitions and projects.
The comparative exploration of the almost 'magical' effects of individual technology and modern telekinetic military systems, as well as the alternative science of magic associated with cave paintings and prehistoric underground settlements, reflects Kiesler's deep interdisciplinary approach to the evolution of art, architecture, and design.
This edition preserves Kiesler's concept of the book as a neo-Vitruvian Renaissance essay, divided into ten parts or books that tell an alternative history and theory of architecture. It also includes sixty intricate illustrations, cut and pasted from books and popular scientific magazines, with detailed captions. The editors have reconstructed the book's text and images from archival material, supplementing them with notes documenting the development of the work. Introductory essays provide a chronology of Kiesler's research and an interpretation of key themes. The appendices offer additional texts and visual materials collected by Kiesler for the project.
