The diplomatic relations of Greece with the USSR and the countries of Northeastern Europe during the period of the post-dictatorship governments of Konstantinos Karamanlis are the subject of this monograph. It is initially structured with an introduction to the broader context of the Eastern World. The developments both domestically and in foreign policy of the USSR and its satellite states are narrated and interpreted.
Not only are political developments analyzed, but also the economic and social conditions. On one hand, the bilateral Greek-Soviet contacts are presented, from the first contacts in 1974, through the gradual progress of 1975-1978, and the high-level contacts of 1979. On the other hand, the bilateral contacts with the communist regimes of Northeastern Europe are discussed. As a third-party perspective, the foreign policy of Greek governments in the 1980s is presented, along with the developments in the internal and external policies of the communist states until the fall of real socialism.
