Description

Description

In the late 1970s, John Dobson introduced a new, simple, and elegant design of altazimuth mount intended for Newtonian mirrors, which quickly became popular. In its simplest form, the Dobson mount consists of a wooden base that allows the optical tube to rotate vertically, while the entire system (the base with the tube) rotates in azimuth. These types of mounts are usually aimed by hand rather than with a motorized drive. Their main advantages are low cost, ease and speed of assembly, and the ability to build mounts capable of supporting very large tubes.

Features

The main mirror has a parabolic surface, which eliminates spherical aberration, a common issue with spherical mirrors. The secondary mirror is supported by a crossed arrangement of metal clips that are only 0.5mm thick, minimizing diffraction effects and light loss. Additionally, the model features a 2" focuser and a 1.25" adapter, allowing the use of eyepieces with both diameters.

SkyWatcher Dobsonian telescopes are equipped with an efficient tension control handle, which is a patented feature of SkyWatcher.

The adjustable TENSION CONTROL handle

The secret of this construction is achieving balance of the optical tube, thanks to the specially designed handles of the base and the use of a special sliding material. This design provides enough friction and braking so that the optical tube moves comfortably and smoothly when a small force is applied to it, and remains stable in the direction it was aimed when no force is applied. The user can easily increase or decrease the braking by simply turning the handle. This feature solves the classic problem of tube balance, commonly encountered in most Dobsonian telescopes. It is available for 8, 10, and 12-inch models.
