This book is an in-depth study of the legal peculiarities of art in general, with the first part focusing on modern art, which was labeled as "degenerate" by the Nazis under the law, with the aim of expropriation and confiscation, as well as the consequences of this designation. This art, which was persecuted and vilified, took its revenge in the major auction houses and the world's most important museums in the post-war period. The same degenerate modern art also became the subject of numerous international legal disputes.

The purpose of the book is to link the designation of art as "degenerate" with the subsequent enormous demand of the victims for justice. It will necessarily explore the evolution of the concept of looting, its pre-war sources, the prevailing perceptions, and what changed afterward. Furthermore, illustrative trials and claims are presented, along with selected legislations enacted post-war in various countries for the same purpose, which are of particular interest.
