Kikuyu lawn seeds produce a lawn that stays green throughout the summer and for a good part of the winter. The species spreads rapidly through thick stolons and rhizomes, and is tolerant of drought and salinity. It is suitable for private and public gardens, sports fields, and roadside embankments.
For germination, it requires a soil temperature of at least 18 °C. Below 8–10 °C, it becomes dormant and turns yellow. It can be sown on its own or as part of mixtures with other cool-season species.
