The knowledge we have in Greece regarding waqf properties is minimal. The Greek scholarly output is almost exclusively limited to the historical dimension of the institution during Ottoman rule or, at best, to the interpretation of the current legislation as it was shaped, which pertains to the administration of waqf properties located in Greece.
However, a reasonable question arises: Does such legislation actually correspond to the essence and substance of the institution itself? Is there alignment between what the current law stipulates and the conceptual definition of a waqf, especially considering that it is a legally recognized Islamic institution? Is there perhaps a contradiction between the laws that are in effect in our country and those that should be in effect, given that the Greek legislator, recognizing the institution, should regulate waqf affairs in the way that Islamic law, as unaltered and the only legitimate "divinely ordained" legislation, prescribes?
