Its main features include:

  • New Klimov WK-1F engine
  • Improved aerodynamics
  • Use of radar in specific versions

Several main versions of this aircraft were developed:

  • The first mass-produced version is the MiG-17F.
  • The MiG-17PF, equipped with radar.
  • The MiG-17PFU version can guide missiles using the aircraft's radar.

The aircraft was also manufactured under license in Poland and China. In Poland, serial production started in 1956 under the name Lim-5, and an attack version (Lim-6bis) was also developed.

The MIG-17 is still in use by the air forces of Mali and North Korea.
