One is as big as a palm and does not seem dangerous. Two is huge and weighs a ton. Three has yellow eyes. Four has a long tail with colored rings. Five is an expert at whispering in the ear. Six never stops wandering. Seven seems small but can become as big as a light bulb. Eight as big as a soccer ball. Nine as big as the living room TV.
These eight creatures (some terrifying, others seemingly harmless) hide under Alma’s bed and come out at night to steal her light, dreams, and hopes. Alma does not dare to talk about them with her family or friends, fearing no one will believe they are real.
But what Alma does not know is that there are monsters that can only be defeated with the help of others. Iria G. Parente and Selene M. Pascual address depression in this moving allegory aimed both at children and adults alike.
