Description & Specifications

Nominated for the Skroutz Book Awards 2026 Audience Awards.

Konstantinos Tsavalos chronicles the oral history of Vrachnos Profitis, the acclaimed album by Thanasis Papakonstantinou, which has had an influence on the contemporary Greek music scene over the past twenty-five years like few other albums. The author met with Thanasis Papakonstantinou and spoke to everyone involved in the album about the circumstances in which it was created, the era in which it came to life, the musical landscape and artistic vision, and the huge impact it had on audiences.

Each chapter is titled after a track on the album. The book also includes an introduction examining why the album was pivotal in shaping Greece’s musical and cultural landscape.

Excerpt from the book

The album strikes an ideal balance between anarchic experimentation and carefully structured sonic accessibility, revealing the two sides of Papakonstantinou: simultaneously creative and subversive, composer and saboteur. The result is a work that is both personal and impersonal, earthly and at the same time otherworldly.

From the prologue by Aris Dimokidis

Just as the multi-layered arrangements of instruments created the evocative soundscape on the album, so too do the layers of the contributors' voices create a unique book. The participants describe how pieces that initially seemed completely unrelated found a common atmosphere and meaning and were transformed and united on the album. […] It is no coincidence that the book succeeds both as a document and as an artistic analysis, as well as a reflection on the era, the origins, and the impact of an album that changed the domestic music scene. And it achieves this because it does not focus only on the truly interesting story of an album, but also explores what it means to make music "from the inside."
