The nipples are made from latex, a material derived from the sap of the rubber tree (Hevea). This sap is processed to produce latex – a durable, elastic, and soft material with a texture similar to that of a mother's breast. Borosilicate glass contains, in addition to the traditional glass mixture, boron trioxide – making it much more durable than other types of glass.
