Sven Nordqvist was born in 1946 in Helsingborg, and drawing and painting have always been his passions. Nordqvist has also worked as an architect, teacher, and graphic artist. In 1983, he won the Opal Publishing House’s illustrated children’s book contest with Agaton Öman and the Alphabet. His next book, Pancake Pie, marked the birth of the characters Pettson and Findus. It was not initially conceived as a series, but the old man and his cat enchanted readers and today are among the most beloved characters in Swedish children’s books.

As a teenager, Nordqvist was inspired by MAD comics, a style that influenced even his later illustrations. He enjoys building and assembling all kinds of complicated mechanisms, a hobby that has left its mark on his books.
