The work "Geography" by Strabo (circa 64 BC – circa 25 AD) is an important contribution to the science of geography. Strabo, who originated from Amaseia in Pontus, was a talented traveler who explored a large part of Italy, as well as various regions of the Near East, including the Black Sea, Asia Minor, Egypt, and parts of Greece.
Continuing his study of mathematical geography, Strabo presented geography in seventeen books. After two introductory books, books 3 and 4 refer to Spain and France, while books 5 and 6 cover Italy and Sicily. Books 7 focus on northern and eastern Europe, 8–10 on Greek lands, 11–14 on major regions of Asia and Asia Minor, book 15 on India and Iran, book 16 on Assyria, Babylon, Syria, and Arabia, and book 17 on Egypt and Africa.
Strabo added detailed descriptions of countries and natural features, in addition to the mathematical and historical information based on the teachings of Eratosthenes, Hipparchus, and Ptolemy. The edition of "Geography" from the Loeb Classical Library consists of eight volumes.
