Keemun tea is a light tea with slightly smoky notes in the aroma and a soft, non-astringent taste reminiscent of unsweetened cocoa. The name comes from the Qimen area in the northern Anhui province, where the mountains are covered with tea bushes.

The production of black tea in the Qimen region began in 1880, following the advice of a young government official who, after losing his position, decided to learn the black tea processing method in the Fujian area. He returned and used the new technique on the same leaves his neighbors had used to prepare green tea.
