This extensive review/assessment essay is published as an interim measure pending the upcoming English-language book by Alexis G. K. Savvidis titled The development and expansion of Byzantine studies. This will serve as a follow-up to the publication from six years ago, The beginnings and foundation of Byzantine studies: a survey with a bibliographical appendix (Hiero­dotos, Athens, 2018; second edition with corrections and additions, 2023, 267 pages). An alternative subtitle could be "The tentative step of future Byzantine historical studies in Greece," and additionally, with an added subtitle in quotation marks of a final encouragement to younger Byzantine scholars and medievalists in Greece: "Respect for the older masters!" What the reader will find on the pages of the book sufficiently documents the author's intentions. The primary aim of this book is to address younger colleagues in the field of Byzantine studies, both in research and university teaching, in order to share some of the author's thoughts and reflections on medieval studies in Greece in the coming years. This is especially relevant in light of overwhelming changes—particularly technological—that are rapidly altering norms, practices, and values that were once considered fixed. In supporting his arguments, the author has relied on established traditional values, concepts, and communication with significant figures, whom he believes he has experienced consistently over his more than four-and-a-half decades in the field (since the late 1970s). This is because no machine will ever replace the work of a dedicated researcher who, working methodically like a "mosaic artist," collects material and then "composes," rather than simply relying on pre-selected content from the vast internet—content that the researcher must control and adapt to their research needs, rather than letting the "tempo" of their work be dictated by machines.
