A battle and strategy board game for 2 players that originated in China and became widely known in Japan. Inspiration, dexterity, combinations, tactics and the ability to plan all play a key role in the game. Its advantages include the constant shift between attack and defense, the impossibility of playing for a draw, and the ability to balance the players’ strengths by giving the weaker player extra stones.
Go originated in China, where it is known as weiqi. The two players, White and Black, take turns placing stones on the goban (board), surrounding territory, capturing their opponent’s stones and protecting their own. It is played mainly in East Asia, in China, Japan, Korea and elsewhere, as well as online throughout the rest of the world.
The name “go” comes from Japan, where it is also known as igo or wigo. The Chinese name weiqi translates as “board game of encirclement” or “encirclement chess.” In Korea, it is known as baduk.
The rules of go are very simple, but the strategy players use is complex and is considered to surpass the depth of other games, such as chess. Go champions never stop refining their strategy. Since ancient times, go has been compared to warfare, and strategies from the Chinese Art of War are sometimes used in the game. As in wars, a game of go ends when the players agree that there are no more meaningful moves. The final score consists of the territory controlled by each player and the number of stones they managed to capture.
