Description

During the papacy of Sixtus IV, a group of Renaissance painters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio, and Rosselli, created a series of frescoes. These are displayed on the left wall as the Life of Moses and on the right as the Life of Christ. Above this fresco zone, there are portraits of popes, and below them, the painting mimics hanging fabrics. The frescoes were completed in 1482, and on August 15, 1483, Sixtus IV celebrated the first Mass in his chapel for the Feast of the Assumption (Dormition) of the Virgin Mary. During the ceremony, the chapel was consecrated and dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Between 1508 and 1512, under the protection of Pope Julius II, Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the chapel, a work that changed Western art and is considered one of the greatest achievements of human culture. After the looting of Rome, the artist painted the Last Judgment between 1535 and 1541. The fame of Michelangelo's paintings has attracted numerous tourists to the chapel for over 500 years.
