The painting depicts the frescoes created during the pontificate of Sixtus IV by leading Renaissance artists such as Sandro Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Ghirlandaio, and Rosselli. On the left wall is the Life of Moses and on the right is the Life of Christ. Above these frescoes are portraits of popes, while below them, the painting imitates hanging fabrics. The chapel was completed in 1482 and 1483 and was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Between 1508-12, Michelangelo, under the protection of Pope Julius II, created the ceiling of the chapel, a work that transformed Western art. After the Sack of Rome, he painted the Last Judgment between 1535-1541.
