During the papacy of Sixtus IV, a group of Renaissance painters, such as Sandro Botticelli, Perugino, Pinturicchio, Gilardino, and Rosselli, created a series of frescoes depicting the Life of Moses and the Life of Christ. The murals were completed in 1482, and the chapel was dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
Between 1508-12, Michelangelo painted the ceiling of the chapel, a work considered one of the greatest achievements of human culture. The fame of his works attracts many tourists to the chapel.
