This review is about the color: Arctic White

The Insta360 GO Ultra is the camera that, in my opinion, comes to fill the gap between the tiny GO 3S and the more “serious” Ace Pro 2, not to replace the former. In other words, it is the camera that takes portability to the next level without sacrificing quality.

On the optical side, the GO Ultra features a 14.27 mm lens (35mm equivalent) with an f/2.85 aperture, offering a wide field of view and plenty of light for everyday and action scenes. The 1/1.28" sensor is impressively large for such a small camera, which significantly improves low-light performance and delivers a cleaner image with better dynamic range compared to the previous GO models. Of course, in very close-up shots, sharpness is lost as well, but the company has already released two kits: one is the Titan Toddler with a mounting base for a hat and a micro lens that allows the much-advertised recording of a child’s face while they do their own thing (there is also a corresponding mode in the camera menu), and the other is a set of macro lenses with different focusing distances.

For video, the camera shoots 4K up to 60fps, which brings it much closer to “regular” action cams. It also supports 1080p up to 240fps for impressive slow motion, while the bitrate reaches 180 Mbps, delivering cleaner footage with less compression. H.264 and H.265 codecs ensure compatibility and high quality, while photos reach 50MP or 12MP depending on the mode, with RAW (DNG) capture available. Here it is worth keeping in mind that, through its software, the camera allows you to enable automatic switching from simple video mode to PureVideo when low-light conditions are detected, in order to boost brightness and color through its AI chip. This is different from setting PureVideo mode from the start. If it enters PureVideo mode, switches to it automatically, or you choose 4K 60fps video, you will see a relevant notice on the settings screen informing you that battery consumption will be higher and the camera will heat up much faster. Also, depending on the mode, some settings options are disabled.

One of the biggest advantages of the GO Ultra is the screen. The 2.5" flip-up touchscreen completely changes the way the camera is used. For the first time in a GO-series model, you can frame shots, see what you are recording, vlog, and operate the device without needing your phone. The Action Pod works as a small base with a screen, or as a separate remote control with a screen if you remove the camera from it, and also as a power bank, increasing total runtime to 200 minutes, while the camera alone reaches 70 minutes. Charging is also impressively fast: 20 minutes for the camera and 40 for the pod. Having already used other action cams (GoPro, DJI, Insta360) and knowing why I chose this one and how I will use it, I do not mind that the batteries are built-in, but for someone buying their first action cam, it is worth keeping in mind that both the camera and the pod have integrated batteries. In 4K 30fps mode, the camera will easily deliver the 70 minutes, and of course at least 190 minutes of continuous use on the pod, depending also on the outside temperature, since it can charge the camera until its own battery is depleted. For someone who wants more battery life, there are options such as the FOMO Power Handle, which also allows camera control, and the FOMO Power Kit for the neck. For the latter, if someone already has other action cams, I would recommend getting the version of the FOMO Power Kit that allows mounting other cameras as well, and the screw-in mount it includes. Personally, I have this one. I also have the old Insta360 Selfie Stick with built-in battery, as well as a smaller one from SmallRig, both extendable and with a remote control, BUT neither of them allows connection to or control of the Go Ultra from the buttons they have.

Storage is one of the most important steps forward... Or... perhaps backward. The GO Ultra accepts microSD cards up to 2TB, which permanently solves the fixed-storage problem that all previous GO models had. Personally, I would like to have the option to store some content in the pod’s internal space and use a microSD in the camera, like, for example, I can do with a DJI drone if I need storage in the controller’s internal space. Connectivity includes Bluetooth 5.4, Wi‑Fi 802.11ax, and USB‑C, ensuring fast file transfer and a stable connection with the app.

As for durability, the camera is IPX8 and can dive down to 10 meters without a housing, while the pod is IPX4, resistant to splashes but not for full underwater use. There is the Aqualens lens which, according to the company, allows better waterproofing as well as an underwater case that accepts the camera together with the pod. Weight remains impressively low: 52.9 grams for the camera and 108.5 for the pod, making it ideal for POV shots, travel, and everyday content.

The GO Ultra incorporates all of Insta360’s well-known technologies, such as FlowState Stabilization and Horizon Lock with AI alignment capability even with a small deviation of up to 10 degrees, keeping the video stable and the horizon level even during intense movement. The app offers AI editing, auto-reframe, and easy editing, making the camera especially friendly for creators who want quick results.

Unfortunately, when it comes to mount options, we move to a different type from the other cameras, so if you get the standard version, keep in mind that at some point you will need to buy at least either the Quick Release Mount or the Action Mount, with the latter having many worthwhile third-party alternatives on Skroutz. Of course, the camera and pod are magnetic so they can be placed on metal surfaces, but be careful with the pod because, due to its weight, it is certain to come off with jolts. The camera itself has a very strong magnet.

    SO:
Among the camera’s positives stand out the large sensor, true 4K60 quality, the flip-up screen, microSD support, excellent stabilization, and waterproof construction. Runtime with the pod is impressive, while charging is among the fastest in the category. The small size and low weight make it ideal for everyday use, travel, and discreet shots. For now there are not many wireless control options, but you can control it from the Action Pod even if you have detached it, while also seeing on the screen what you are recording, with the ability to pause recording, change the shot, and then resume recording; and I also had no problem controlling it (recording, taking photos, etc.) from the Insta360 Mic Air. This small microphone is properly recognized and provides good-quality audio recording. It is also compatible with the company’s portable printer.

On the negative side, the camera alone has limited battery life, the pod is not fully waterproof, and low-light quality does not reach the Ace Pro 2, although on paper the specs are close. The price is higher than the GO 3S, while the flip-up screen increases the size of the pod. It does not have advanced color profiles or optical zoom; it does crop in, which remains exclusive to larger models. I also notice a more pronounced temperature increase in the latest update.

Overall, the Insta360 GO Ultra is the most mature tiny camera Insta360 has released. It is clearly the transitional solution between the GO 3S and the Ace Pro 2, offering portability, quality, and functionality in a package aimed at those who want something small but capable. If you want the best small camera from the company without moving up to the size of the Ace Pro 2, the GO Ultra is the one that ideally bridges the two worlds.

In Greece there are two bundles:
    1) the standard one, which includes the camera with the pod, instructions and stickers, a small strap with a detachable clip, the magnetic necklace, so to speak, a magnetic soft-clip style mount for hats, and a charging cable.
    2) the creator bundle, which in addition to the above includes the Quick Release Mount, the mini 2 in 1 tripod without the remote, and the pivot stand (for which I will do a separate review after I put it through its paces and see how truly reusable the sticker is).

The bad thing about Insta360 is that it no longer has serious competition from GoPro, and DJI’s options are only worthwhile purely in terms of price for now. So for prices above 400 euros, and given the conditions in our country, it is a good idea to also look at DJI’s options unless finances are not a problem for you. For the prices currently available (349 and 389 euros per bundle), they are quite good prices. Especially for this camera, a new family with small children, combined with an average smartphone, can fill up with memories that your children will watch later. Also, someone starting out as a vlogger with a low budget but a love for adventure will find this camera more convenient.

    Extra tips:
    - when you place the camera on the pod, it “grabs” magnetically and also “locks” with a clip. To remove it, press and hold the orange side button on the pod while pulling the camera out.
    - the camera itself has a button on the front, lower left, so you can turn it on and start recording, stop recording, take photos, etc.; however, to operate it from that button, you must first select from the menu the modes it will perform with a single and double press, and then the camera must not be connected to the pod. The pod must be completely inactive.
    - the camera and the pod have LED lights with color-coded operating status indicators; I am listing them here so you can refer to them at any time:
    1. When the camera flashes red, it means it is actively recording: either video, time-lapse, or time-shift.
    2. When the indicator is solid or flashing blue, the camera is in standby, powered on, fully charged, and waiting for a command.
    3. If it flashes red and blue together, then the “Find My” function has been activated through the app so you can find it if you lost it, and yes, once I had it outside the pod and had left things around, so I found it through the app.
    4. When the indicator is solid orange, either the camera or the action pod is charging. When it turns solid green, charging is complete.
    5. A solid yellow indicator means a complete shutdown due to a problem: usually because the SD card is full, no card has been inserted, or there is a file or USB recording error.
    6. If the yellow indicator flashes three times every five seconds, then there is a low battery, insufficient available space, or some charging/temperature issue. Especially if it is temperature-related, stop recording immediately, turn off the camera and pod, and let them cool down.
    7. When the indicator flashes blue, the camera is in the process of updating the firmware. Do not touch anything until the process is complete.

I hope I helped, thank you for your time and for reading! Happy recording and may you keep beautiful moments with respect for those around you.

It's worth it, as soon as I received it, it had 60% battery and within 20 minutes it was fully charged (both the camera and the pod). It connected very easily both to the laptop and to the Insta360 app on my phone. I set it up easily and quickly, went out at night with the motorcycle, and the video (with pure mode) came out crystal clear.

Tragically convenient that it detaches from the main frame and becomes much smaller and more handy!

    • Quite good video quality (not perfect)
    • Quite good photo quality (not perfect)
    • Quite good for night shots (not perfect)

Its absolute feature, of course, is its modularity, which makes it perfect for many different uses!

Definitely worth its money, as well as the purchase, in my personal opinion!
