The lady and the unicorn is the title of a series of six tapestries designed in Paris and woven in Flanders around 1500 AD, at the dawn of the French Renaissance. All depict a lady framed by a lion and a unicorn in different scenes. Five of the tapestries are believed to represent the five senses - taste, smell, touch, sight, and this one hearing. The sixth bears the inscription "In my unique desire." The meaning is unclear but has been interpreted as representing love or understanding. In the sense of hearing, the lady is playing a portable instrument, on a table covered with a tablecloth. The maid stands on the opposite side and handles the pipe. The lion and the unicorn frame her holding banners. The entire set of tapestries is exhibited at the National Museum of the Middle Ages in Paris, and is considered one of the most important medieval works of art in Europe.
