Traditional Greek wooden flutewire made from reed. Includes six holes with a B♭ pitch. Very easy to blow with a soft and warm sound.
The thiambóli or souráli is a flute-like instrument with an open bottom end. The top end is slanted and closed with a stopper that leaves only a thin slit. Just after the stopper, or souro, or pin, as it is called in Crete, there is a rectangular hole through which air passes and produces the whistling sound.
It is usually found in the Aegean islands and Crete, and in some cases in Macedonia and Thrace. Known by various names such as pithkiaúli in Cyprus or sfyróchábio in Crete. Most often made from reed and less frequently from wood or metal.
The souráli belongs to those instruments that the performer makes himself and is played either alone or accompanied by a leather percussion instrument such as the tumba (Naxos and Crete).
