  • The Sailor Tokiwa Matsu is a beautiful green ink that shades to brown in the areas with the most ink when you write. The shading also depends on the paper you use; however, after trying it, I found that you do not necessarily need premium paper such as Tomoe River for it to shade.

Indicatively, some budget-friendly options where it looks excellent are: The Writing Fields Flexbook (the plain notebook), MILAN 90gsm notebook, Q Connect spiral notebook from Plaisio, Globus spiral notebook, and, as a more premium option, a Paperblanks notebook with 100 gsm paper. The photos are in order, from the Flexbook notebook and the Q Connect, which are also the cheapest ones I tested it on. All tested with a TWSBI Eco T medium nib. It may bleed through the page more easily with a broader nib.

Warning! On Clairefontaine paper, paradoxically, the shading is not very good and it bleeds a little through to the back of the page.
