In the elegant Parisian society of the nineteenth century, the wealthy young Armand Duval meets the beautiful and mysterious Marguerite Gautier, a young woman of liberated morals.
They fall in love, and Marguerite agrees to abandon her sinful past for Armand's sake and follows him to the countryside, far from the city and the constraints of Parisian society.
