Description & Specifications

An exciting presentation of exotic magazines and catalog covers from the archives, featuring seventy brands, including Salomon and The North Face. For decades, outdoor brands have placed bold and ambitious imagery on the covers of their magazines and catalogs, pushing the boundaries of photography and graphic design.

This fascinating collection of exotic covers, sourced from the Outdoor Recreation Archive at Utah State University and spanning a hundred years, features seventy iconic companies such as Columbia, The North Face, and Snow Peak. Together, they form a stunning visual sequence that spans generations, sports, styles, and continents, offering something for creators of all orientations.

The images, ranging from blurry climbing photographs to familiar illustrations of happy campers and cinematic landscapes, are organized cleverly by medium – from nature (outdoor photography) to processed (edited photography), remix (collage) to lines (illustration), the object (product photography) to words (typography).

Introductory writings provide an overview of the scale and creative opportunities that each medium offers, while interspersed throughout the book are a series of pieces written by invited contributors. These specially commissioned personal reflections – from more than twenty industry leaders, designers, creatives, and athletes, including photographer Chris Burkard, designer Jeff Staple, and climber Conrad Anker – focus on a specific image and explore what it means to them.

Four 8-page plates, meanwhile, printed on different cardstock, reveal a selection of interesting pages from within the catalogs. A concluding "Making Of" section offers a behind-the-scenes look through the archive, while a visual index provides a new way to view the images and further inspiration for designers and other creatives.

Meticulously crafted, with a reveal of successive and influential covers from various decades, The Outdoor Archive is a coveted resource for graphic designers and creative studios, as well as a valuable object in its own right.
