I think it’s ideal for a day at the beach, to read something relaxing that will make you forget everything but at the same time draw you into the story and make you bond with the book’s characters!

In this book, we meet Emily, who wakes up on Valentine's Day planning to have a perfect, romantic day with her boyfriend. Only... everything goes wrong. She crashes, catches her boyfriend cheating on her, and generally, nothing goes as she imagined.

And as if that wasn't enough, when she goes to sleep to forget, she wakes up and... relives the same day. Yes, she's stuck in a loop. The same day again and again, until she starts to see things differently.

As she tries to find a way to "break free" from this repetition, she begins to get to know herself better: what she wants, what scares her, what her dreams are — and along the way, she makes some interesting acquaintances...

Lynn Painter's writing is simply: fast-paced, humorous, a bit cliché (but who doesn't love clichés when it comes to rom-coms), and her characters are so realistic that you feel like you know them.

If you love YA romance with a little magic twist (like a time loop), then you have to read this book!

The Do-Over by Lynn Painter was an incredibly fun and sweet read, full of humor, emotion, and youthful energy. It clearly belongs to the YA contemporary romance category, with a pleasant element of magical realism that gives it a unique character: a time loop, repeating the same day. It may seem like a relatively simple romantic story at first, but Painter manages to give depth to the plot and the characters, without losing the light, feel-good vibe of the book.

The protagonist, Emilie, finds herself trapped reliving Valentine’s Day over and over again, a day that was supposed to be perfect—but ends up going completely wrong. Through this repetition, Emilie begins to reevaluate her choices, her relationships, and herself. The most beautiful aspect of The Do-Over is how Emilie herself evolves and starts to see her life from a different perspective. And of course, amidst all this, there’s the romantic element, which I simply love.

The love interest is a character you can’t help but love. He’s the type who initially seems distant and a bit “troubled,” but as the story unfolds, a sensitivity and honesty are revealed that make him an ideal romantic hero. The chemistry between them is so natural and sweet. There are moments that make you laugh out loud, others that move you slightly, and overall this balance of emotions is something Lynn Painter knows how to achieve wonderfully.

Although the story is reminiscent of other rom-coms with a time loop theme, the author’s writing makes the book stand out. It’s fresh, cute, and full of relatable thoughts about adolescence, expectations, mistakes, and the need to love ourselves, beyond the romance.

If you’re looking for a romantic YA that will lift your spirits, with cute characters, humor, and a touch of magic in everyday life, then this book is ideal.
