Finally, Sony has worked its magic.
I have had in my possession for a few months now one of the most impressive lenses Sony has released in recent years, and probably the most luxury zoom of the GM series at the moment, and generally of all brands without exception. See photo.
From what it seems so far, it is interesting for cinematic work, branding video, for use with FX3, A1 II, FX6, and this particular lens fits incredibly well with all these setups.
Why did I buy this special lens?
The big advantage is that it gives a look very close to primes, but with the convenience of zoom and with a constant f/2 throughout the range.
In practice, at 85-135mm it has bokeh reminiscent of 85 1.4, 135 1.8, it maintains sharpness at a low aperture, and the separation is cinematic without constantly changing lenses.
For weddings, commercial, portraits, live events, for any job it is almost a cheat code.
The AF is considered one of the best Sony has put in a zoom, fast, silent, no hunting, excellent tracking on FX3 with almost no breathing, like the 28-70mm f/2 I also have.
For gimbal and moving subjects, it is a serious tool.
Image quality, what can I say, simply epic.
The sharpness is GM level everywhere, even at f/2, with very strong microcontrast and clean bokeh.
Many users, like myself, who use primes, have practically replaced 50mm, 85mm, 135mm primes for professional use with just one lens.
For video, it is truly flagship, that’s why I got it after all: internal zoom, almost zero focus breathing, clean MF response, de-click button for aperture ring, stable balance on rig - gimbal, on FX3/FX6 it delivers a Netflix commercial look without exaggeration, really, with the right lighting.
Let’s go to the negatives, not everything is positive.
The weight, it is quite heavy, 1340g, much more of a brick than the 70-200 GM II, with FX3 it’s okay but not for all day.
With a7 bodies like sIII it becomes front-heavy with prolonged use.
It does not have optical stabilization, does not support TC.
So if you need 200mm+ for sports/wildlife, the 70-200 GM II remains more useful if you want to go above 150-200.
For wedding use it is excellent, for commercial, branding video, portraits, events it just rocks, for travel it is tiring as well as for run & gun.
*My experience with this lens is that if you do weddings, commercial video, portraits, cinematic projects, the 50-150 f/2 GM is perhaps the most future-proof Sony zoom-tele today.
It’s not a lens of logic.
It’s a lens for the few, for those who want the prime look without changing lenses.

Έχω στην κατοχή μου εδώ και λίγους μήνες έναν από τους πιο εντυπωσιακούς φακούς που έχει βγάλει η Sony τα τελευταία χρόνια και μάλλον ο πιο luxury zoom της σειράς GM αυτή τη στιγμή και γενικά όλων των εταιρειών μηδέν εξαιρουμένου.βλ φωτό
Από αυτά που φαίνεται μέχρι στιγμής έχουν ενδιαφέρουν κινηματογραφική δουλειά , branding video, για χρήση με FX3, A1 II, FX6, ο συγκεκριμένος φακός ταιριάζει τρομακτικά καλά σε όλα αυτά τα setup.
Γιατί αγόρασα αυτόν τον ιδιαίτερο φακό;
Το μεγάλο πλεονέκτημα είναι ότι δίνει look πολύ κοντά σε σταθερούς, αλλά με την ευκολία ζουμ και με σταθερό f/2 σε όλο το μήκος.
Στην πράξη, στα 85-135mm έχει bokeh που θυμίζει 85 1.4, 135 1.8 κρατά sharpness σε χαμηλό διάφραγμα και το separation είναι κινηματογραφικό χωρίς να αλλάζεις συνεχώς φακούς.
Για γάμους, commercial, πορτρέτα, live event, για κάθε δουλειά είναι σχεδόν cheat code
Το af θεωρείται από τα κορυφαία που έχει βάλει η Sony σε zoom, γρήγορο, αθόρυβο, χωρίς hunting, εξαιρετικό tracking σε FX3 χωρίς καθόλου σχεδόν breathing όπως ο 28-70mm f/2 που έχω επίσης.
Για gimbal, και κινούμενα θέματα είναι σοβαρό εργαλείο.
Ποιότητα εικόνας τι να λέμε απλά επική.
Η οξύτητα είναι GM επιπέδου παντού, ακόμα και στο f/2, με πολύ δυνατό microcontrast, και καθαρό bokeh.
Αρκετοί χρήστες όπως και εγώ που χρησιμοποιώ σταθερούς πρακτικά αντικατέστησα , 50mm, 85mm, 135mm σταθερούς για επαγγελματική χρήση με έναν μόνο φακό.
Για video είναι πραγματικά flagship για αυτό το πήρα άλλωστε, εσωτερικό zoom, σχεδόν μηδενικό focus breathing καθαρή ανταπόκριση MF, κουμπί de-click ροδέλας διαφράγματος σταθερή ισορροπία στο rig - gimbal, σε FX3/FX6 γράφει Netflix commercial look χωρίς υπερβολή πραγματικά με τον κατάλληλο φωτισμό.
Πάμε στα αρνητικά, δεν είναι όλα στα θετικά
Το βάρος, είναι αρκετά βαρύς, 1340g, αρκετά πιο τούβλο από τον 70-200 GM II, με FX3 είναι οκ αλλά όχι για όλη μέρα,
με σώματα α7 οπως sIII γίνεται μπροστινοβαρο σε πολύωρη χρήση.
Δεν έχει optical stabilization, δεν υποστηρίζει TC.
Άρα αν χρειάζεσαι 200mm+ για sports/wildlife, ο 70-200 GM II παραμένει πιο χρήσιμος αν θέλεις να πας πάνω από 150-200.
Για χρήση γάμων είναι εξαιρετικός, για commercial, branding video, πορτρέτα, events απλά τα σπάει, σε ταξίδι είναι κουραστικός όπως και για run &gun.
*Η εμπειρία μου από αυτόν τον φακό είναι πως αν κάνεις, γάμους, commercial βίντεο, πορτρέτα, κινηματογραφικά projects ο 50-150 f/2 GM είναι ίσως ο πιο future-proof Sony ζουμ - τελε σήμερα.
Δεν είναι φακός λογικής,
Είναι φακός για λίγους, για αυτούς που θέλουν το look primes χωρίς να αλλάζουμε φακούς.
