Description

Gustave Caillebotte (1848-1894), who observed and depicted the men in his life, such as brothers, friends, and workers in the Paris area, is perhaps the most characteristic French Impressionist artist. Masculine themes are prominent in several of his most famous works, such as "Floor Scrapers," "Man at the Bath," "Young Man at the Window," "Party While Boating," and "Paris Street, Rainy Day." The originality of Caillebotte's representations of men is explored in depth for the first time in this catalog, published to accompany a major international exhibition co-organized by the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Orsay Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Along with paintings, drawings, and photographs, it includes an addition with maps and new biographical information about Caillebotte's social network. This volume contains thematic essays from curators and leading scholars that explore the complex aspects of Caillebotte's identity as a son, brother, soldier, bachelor, amateur, and athlete. These essays raise questions of identity, creating space for ambiguous and fluid expressions of gender and masculinity both for Caillebotte and the broader French world at the end of the 19th century.

The catalog "Gustave Caillebotte: Painting Men" offers an engaging series of essays that explore the complex questions of masculinity and manhood in the art of this still enigmatic artist. The volume includes insights from many seasoned scholars of Impressionism, as well as contributions from a new generation of writers who, with fresh perspectives and new voices, help bring the artist's world to life.

Gustave Caillebotte remains the most mysterious central figure of the Impressionist movement. This catalog includes the latest research on the artist from contemporary experts, offering new readings of his known works, as well as examinations of several paintings that have only recently come to light. It is richly illustrated with the artist's finest works, defining the striking uniqueness of his artistic recognition.
