Description & Specifications

An visual exploration of cyberpunk and its global influence on cinema culture.

Cyberpunk, a subgenre of science fiction, emerged in the early 1980s and uniquely captured the concerns of the era. Featuring near-future scenarios set in worlds resembling our own, cyberpunk stories juxtapose technological advancements with social upheaval, ecological crises, and urban decay. Central protagonists in these narratives are antiheroes fighting against corrupt political systems, malfunctioning technology, and global megacorporations.

Cyberpunk: Envisioning Possible Futures through Cinema examines the global impact and lasting influence of cyberpunk on cinema culture. Through rare behind-the-scenes photographs, stills from films, and artistic concepts, the book highlights iconic cyberpunk films such as Blade Runner, Tron, and The Matrix; foundational animated films like Akira and Ghost in the Shell; as well as more recent releases like Sleep Dealer, Pumzi, Night Raiders, and Neptune Frost. Over 20 case studies written by critics, historians, and filmmakers provide new perspectives on these films and their legacies. The book also includes an in-depth introduction by curator Doris Berger; an essay by communication scholar Carlen Lavigne discussing the literary roots of the genre in the 20th century and the new, global directions it has taken in the 21st century; and an interview with filmmakers Danis Goulet and Wanuri Kahiu reflecting on the connection between cyberpunk, afrofuturism, and indigenous futurism.
