Description & Specifications

The unpublished succession struggle at Walt Disney Productions following the death of its founder, as well as the generational transformation that led to the birth of the modern multi-billion dollar animation industry. “A story that opens the eyes to one of the most culturally influential American companies.” —Kirkus Review.

Walt Disney left behind big dreams when he died in 1966. Perhaps none was greater than the hope that his son-in-law, Ron Miller, would someday lead his studio. Under Miller's leadership, Disney expanded into new areas: global theme parks, computer animation, cable television, home video, and video games. Despite these innovations, Ron struggled to extend the Disney brand beyond the middle image of family entertainment as times and tastes evolved. The tensions between Miller and Walt's nephew, Roy E. Disney, threatened to destroy the company, leading Wall Street types to take aim at Mickey Mouse. Meanwhile, the aging Animation Department—once the core of Walt’s business—was a memo away from shutting down forever.

However, thanks to the radical efforts of Walt's veterans to attract and nurture new talent, it revived from this sudden influx of artists who would revolutionize the film industry. Moreover, this new generation would prove over time that animation was much more than just stuff for kids—it was a multi-billion dollar industry.

This is the story of the executives and animators who clashed and collaborated to keep alive America's most historic company during the most uncertain period in its hundred-year history.
