The need to jump through menus and search aimlessly for fun, as in many open-world games, has vanished. In Burnout 5, every inch of the world is designed to deliver thrilling fun in the Burnout style. Every intersection is a potential collision area, and every alley is an opportunity to rack up driving violations.

The rules are made to be broken, and when players enter Paradise City, they are awarded a Driver's License that quickly begins to accumulate records of their most aggressive, reckless, and destructive actions behind the wheel. The entire world is unlocked from the start. There are 34 AI drivers in the world present from the beginning of the game. The player starts each gameplay session in free drive, with no predetermined path in the game.
