"Are you playing with these standards?" he demanded to know. "With these f***ing standards? Because, listen to me, they don't even come close to Premier League level. They're shit!" Lack of focus, terrible cooperation, no cohesion – he listed all the issues that had plagued us since my transfer in the middle of the season; and you didn't have to be a genius to understand why. As the coach was chewing us out, heads turned between me and Vincent, who had taken up opposite ends of the room. From the moment I joined, the team's dynamic had f***ed up. Somehow, this was a natural consequence of integrating a new member into a tight-knit team; but mainly the problem was that I, the league's top scorer, and Vincent, the star defender and team captain, hated each other. We played in different positions, but our rivalry was notorious. It was the only real competition I had to face in terms of the press, prestige, and sponsors – all of which are important in our world – but the biggest source of our conflict was what had happened at the last World Cup. The dive. The fight. The red card.

The Striker is a captivating sports romance that combines dynamic chemistry, emotional depth, and the beloved "enemies-to-lovers" trope with a mature, second chance at love. The plot follows two characters: Scarlett DuBois is a former prima ballerina whose career was prematurely cut short due to a serious accident. She now teaches at a dance academy in London. Asher Donovan is one of the most famous footballers in the world, known for his performances in the Premier League. After a conflict with his teammate and Scarlett's brother, Vincent DuBois, which cost their team a championship, Asher is forced to participate in an off-season training program under Scarlett's guidance. As the two spend time together, an intense attraction develops, despite the difficulties and obstacles they face.

Personally, I admired Scarlett for her strength and determination, while Asher won my heart as an unexpectedly sensitive hero beneath his arrogant, famous persona. The scenes between them are filled with tension, humor, and suspense, and Ana Huang, true to her style, does not disappoint in the spice. I believe the book has well-crafted emotional development and cameo characters that beautifully connect the broader Ana Huang universe. Specifically, Asher Donovan has previously appeared in the books Twisted Hate and King of Sloth, while Scarlett is a friend of Jules from Twisted Hate. A must-read for fans of contemporary romance literature who love second chances, character interaction, and dynamic love interests.

Striker by Ana Huang is a romantic novel set against the world of professional football, personal rivalries, and forbidden attractions. Asher Donovan is the ultimate star of the Premier League – talented, dynamic, and in the media spotlight. After a heated argument with his former rival and now teammate, he is called to spend the summer with him in a program to repair their relationship. There, however, he meets Scarlett — his personal trainer and… the "enemy's" sister. And that's where things get complicated.

The beginning of the book was quite promising. The story had a good pace, the characters were presented interestingly, and Scarlett as the heroine was likable and smart. Asher, contrary to my expectations, was not the typical arrogant guy, but exuded something more mature and human.

However, the second half of the book disappointed me. The plot began to become predictable, especially after a promise Asher makes, which makes it obvious where the story is headed. The developments lose some of their interest, and some parts, mainly the dialogues, felt drawn out without substantial reason.

Overall, Striker is a pleasant romantic story with intensity and forbidden love, but it loses points in its progression — and mainly in the predictability of the second act.
