Among the various native weapons used by the Italian forces in World War II, the Semovente M40 da75/18 was perhaps the most successful and served as the basis for the improved M42 da75/34, which is depicted in this model. The base tank M15/42 provides the essential framework, while the superior penetration is achieved with the 75mm L/34 gun. Although production began in the spring of 1943, most vehicles ended up in German hands after the Italian armistice with the Allies in September of that year. They were mainly used in anti-tank units associated with the German Field Divisions, and their low profile and powerful armament ensured that they were a threat to the enemy, particularly in ambushes. They fought until the surrender of the Germans in May 1945.
