What is diatomaceous earth?

Diatoms are single-celled algae with a cell wall, found in both marine ecosystems and freshwater. When the single-celled algae die, their fine skeletons remain, which are the hard and porous outer cell walls of the diatoms with silicon dioxide as the main component. The fine skeletons settle, accumulate, and form large deposits, which are called diatomaceous earth.
