In 1786, a controversial Constitution appeared in America, attributed to Frederick the Great, who was then considered by many to be a sort of leader of Freemasonry. Based on the provisions of this Constitution, the degrees of the order increased from 25 to 33, and the Supreme Governance of the order was entrusted to a "Supreme Council," composed of nine "Sovereign Grand Inspectors General" who necessarily held the 33rd degree.

The first Supreme Council of the 33rd degree for the United States of America, which was also the first Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite in the world, was established in Charleston, South Carolina, on May 31, 1801, under the name "Mother Supreme Council." In 1860, the seat of the Supreme Council was moved to Washington, D.C. Twelve years later, on August 5, 1813, Emanuel De La Motta, a 33rd degree from Savannah, Georgia, and Grand Treasurer of the Supreme Council in Charleston, organized the 33rd degree Supreme Council for the Northern District and Jurisdiction of the USA in New York City.

Since then, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite (A.A.S.R.) has spread to all countries of the world and is regarded, along with the Royal Arch Rite, as one of the globally dominant rites. It first appeared in Greece in 1872. In the first volume of the book THE ANCIENT & ACCEPTED SCOTTISH RITE, the Red Freemasonry is examined, which includes 15 degrees (from the 4th to the 18th), which are: 4th Secret Master, 5th Perfect Master, 6th Secretary of Secrets, 7th Treasurer and Judge, 8th Supervisor of the Buildings, 9th Elect Master of the Nine, 10th Illustrious Master of the 15, 11th Sovereign Elect of the 12, 12th Grand Master Architect, 13th Knight of the Royal Arch, 14th Sovereign Architect, 15th Knight of the East or of the Sword, 16th Prince of Jerusalem, 17th Knight of the East and the West, and 18th Rose-Croix Prince or Knight of the Eagle and the Pelican.
