The art of working with Damascus steel has a history of millennia. In this art, objects made of steel or iron are decorated by engraving a design on the surface. Then, a thin sheet of gold is placed over the design and deeply embossed into the material. To make the pattern visible, the object is heated to a temperature of about 800° C, causing the steels to oxidize and turn black, while the gold begins to shine.
This technique traveled with the Arabs to Spain and has been perfected in the Spanish city of Toledo. In 1931, Pelikan adopted this technique for the Toledo model, which maintains the design unchanged over time. Today, the decorative casing is made of Sterling silver and covered with a layer of gold.
Each Toledo fountain pen is a unique piece made in Germany, with the tiny engravings on the patterns being handcrafted. Due to the large volume of work, a maximum of 200 pieces are produced monthly. The cap and both ends are made of high-quality black resin.
