B. How to use the device
- Place the cuff (air chamber) of the sphygmomanometer
- Relax and rest for at least 15 minutes before measuring.
- If you are right-handed, place the cuff above your left arm.
- Turn the cuff so that the diaphragm of the stethoscope is above the elbow.
- Place the earpiece over the artery on the inner side of the wrist joint.
- Grab the end of the cuff and wrap it gently around your arm with the Velcro tape.
- Inflate the cuff
- Palpate the pulse of the artery with your fingers.
- Hold the monitor in your left hand until you hear the whoosh.
- Close the air supply to the pump (clockwise).
- Inflate by repeatedly pumping with your right hand.
- Deflate the cuff slowly
- Open the valve slowly by turning it counterclockwise.
- Remember that the pressure from the cuff has stopped blood circulation.
- Systolic pressure
- Listen carefully to your pulse.
- Note the reading on the monitor when you hear the faint rhythmic beats.
- Diastolic pressure
- Listen carefully to the stethoscope as the air pressure continues to drop.
- Read the indicator when you no longer hear the sounds.
