B. How to use the device

  • Place the cuff (air chamber) of the sphygmomanometer
  • Relax and rest for at least 15 minutes before measuring.
  • If you are right-handed, place the cuff above your left arm.
  • Turn the cuff so that the diaphragm of the stethoscope is above the elbow.
  • Place the earpiece over the artery on the inner side of the wrist joint.
  • Grab the end of the cuff and wrap it gently around your arm with the Velcro tape.
  • Inflate the cuff
  • Palpate the pulse of the artery with your fingers.
  • Hold the monitor in your left hand until you hear the whoosh.
  • Close the air supply to the pump (clockwise).
  • Inflate by repeatedly pumping with your right hand.
  • Deflate the cuff slowly
  • Open the valve slowly by turning it counterclockwise.
  • Remember that the pressure from the cuff has stopped blood circulation.
  • Systolic pressure
  • Listen carefully to your pulse.
  • Note the reading on the monitor when you hear the faint rhythmic beats.
  • Diastolic pressure
  • Listen carefully to the stethoscope as the air pressure continues to drop.
  • Read the indicator when you no longer hear the sounds.

C. Note

With proper care, the blood pressure monitoring system will operate reliably for many years.
