Description

May 1912. While the residents of Andros await the "unveiling" of the bust of Theophilos Kairis, the Holy Synod pressures the state to cancel the ceremony and demolish the excommunicated "marble man." In the newspapers of Athens, the young intellectuals of the time (Zach. Papantoniou, Pavlos Nirvanas, G. Lichnos) write passionate articles about the persecution of the "innocent marble."

Kostis Palamas, having recently suffered persecution himself for supporting demoticism, writes the poem "To Theophilos Kairis"; a tribute to the "heretical" philosopher, for whom the State still keeps the "door of honor" closed. This book examines the ideas of liberalism, with various references to the persecution of Theophilos Kairis.

Heretics and "hairy" figures star in a story that is pivotal for the emergence of secularization as well as for the ethics of free speech.
