This book addresses the relationship between cinema and love, the relationships between the two sexes, sexuality, and eroticism. It explores the meaningfulness of these themes within the aesthetic filmic whole, the cinematic form that these meanings take, and their particular aesthetics and significance in the cinematic universe, across different films and directors.

Additionally, it considers the directorial dimension of the discussed films. The book is a revised version of a previously published book from 2005, complemented with twenty-two new texts. We can read any intermediate chapter that interests us, focusing on a director, a group of films, or a general or theoretical subject of the book.

The selection of directors was based on their sensibility and artistic quality. This choice was made because they have developed a contemplation around the theme of love in their works, because they have engaged with the issues of sexuality or the relationships between the two sexes, and mainly because we love them.

The author's wish is for there to be no mythologizing, idealizing, bias, or imposition of a "closed" ideological perspective in handling erotic (cinematic) themes. The first part is general and theoretical. The second deals with creators in Europe and Asia. The third part addresses the directing of love in American cinema. The fourth part focuses on love in Greek cinema.
