NOBEL PRIZE IN LITERATURE WINNER 2024
Like a long winter dream, this haunting and visionary new novel by the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature winner, Han Kang, takes us from modern South Korea to its painful history.
Beginning on a December morning, We Do Not Part follows Kyunga as she travels from the city of Seoul to the forests of Jeju Island, to the home of her old friend, Inseon. Inseon, hospitalized after an accident, has begged Kyunga to hurry there to feed her beloved bird, which would otherwise die.
Kyunga takes the first flight to Jeju, but a snowstorm hits the island moments after she arrives, plunging her into a world of white. Facing icy winds and snowstorms, she wonders if she'll arrive in time to save the bird—or even survive the terrifying cold that surrounds her with every step. As night falls, she fights to reach Inseon’s house, unaware of the descent into darkness that awaits her.
There, the long-hidden story of Inseon’s family comes to light, in dreams and memories passed from mother to daughter, and in a carefully assembled archive documenting a horrific massacre on the island seventy years ago.
We Do Not Part is a hymn to friendship, an ode to imagination, and above all, an indictment against forgetting.
