The third volume covers the most dramatic period of the Cypriot issue up to 1974: the coup of the junta and the Turkish invasion.
The change of guard in November 1973, given the political nonsense, paranoia, and fanaticism of the Ioannidis regime, rendered the path towards the tragedy of the coup and, subsequently, the Turkish invasion inevitable.
The American factor, as represented at the time by Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, clandestinely contributed to the execution of the Turkish invasion. Attila I and Attila II. He considered the Turkish invasion necessary for the creation of facts on the ground, upon which a de facto solution of geographical separation would be based and the Turkish military presence in Cyprus would be strengthened.
Kissinger believed that this last point served American strategic interests in the Eastern Mediterranean. In this context, he made every effort to prevent Greece from reacting in Cyprus, specifically with the intervention of the Greek Air Force and the Greek Navy.
The prevention of a Greek reaction also served what was a primary goal for the American side: to avoid a direct Greek-Turkish conflict that could lead to the dissolution of NATO's southeastern wing.
