The incensing by the faithful is a command from God, as stated in the Old Testament, many millennia ago. Before the incensing begins, the priest blesses the incense and prays that the offering may have the "grace of the Holy Spirit." During Vespers, the phrase “Let my prayer rise before you as incense” is chanted as the beginning of the psalmody part of the service, connecting the incensing with the service.
